BIGYELLOW.COM · EARLY ONLINE ADVERTISING

From production bottleneck to advertiser self-service.

Creative strategy, team leadership and a practical response to the early web’s constraints.

The challenge

Early online advertising depended on a proprietary production environment with a limited color palette and hand-built, pixel-by-pixel artwork. Managing company artists and freelance contributors, Bob saw how this labor-intensive process constrained the service advertisers received.

The insight

Advertisers needed a practical way to publish and maintain their business information. A reusable system could give them meaningful choice without requiring every advertisement to be drawn individually.

The creative and technical partnership

Bob identified the opportunity, developed the creative brief, and directed creative development. He partnered with a programmer to build the system and commissioned additional artwork for a reusable image library.

The customer experience

Advertisers selected a template and library images, then entered their information into text fields. They could return online to change their text and image selections themselves. The early system used supplied assets rather than customer uploads.

What changed

The working solution put routine content choices and updates into the advertiser’s hands. The project connected a production problem with an opportunity to give customers greater control.

The lasting lesson

A useful creative idea can change how a service works. This project brought together observation, a clear creative brief, reusable visual components, and collaboration between creative leadership and programming.
