The Bottom of the Glass
“Sometimes the way out begins at the bottom.”
While serving in the United States Air Force, I volunteered as a drug and alcohol counselor as a secondary duty. The experience made this assignment personal. Alcoholism is difficult to live with—and painful to watch—because help often cannot begin until the person reaches what treatment calls rock bottom.
Given an article about alcoholism to illustrate, I reduced that hard truth to one visual paradox: a figure descending into the bottom of a glass. The original thought was simple and unforgiving—you have to get in to get out.
The original press-type caption has been removed from this restored presentation. The image can now carry the idea without dated typography competing with it.
